Two New York women were arrested on Thursday (April 2) for planning to build a homemade bomb.
Asia Siddiqui was found to be in possession of propane tanks and instructions on how to rig them into explosive devices. Her former roommate, Noelle Velentzas, had a history of expressing support for terrorist attacks in the U.S., including the events of 9/11. The official criminal complaint stated that during the period of May 2013 to the present, the women “conspired to use a weapon of mass destruction, an explosive device, somewhere in the U.S.”
Prosecutors reported that Velentzas espoused “violent Jihadist ideology,” and both women had viewed Islamic State material on the internet. Authorities stated that there was no evidence that the women had direct ties to the Islamic State or any other known terror group. Investigators determined that the actions of the women never resulted in any danger to the public at any point in time.
