For decades date rape has been a serious issue plaguing cities and universities. With a flick of the wrist, a drug can be added to a drink and the person is none-the-wiser. As it takes effect, the partner takes advantage of the unsuspecting person. Unless caught in the act, the man or woman is unaware of this heinous act.
That is about to change. Student developers at N.C. State University are working to create a nail polish that detects date rape drugs. Called ‘Undercover Colors,’ the varnish changes color when it has been exposed to the toxins. According to Elle, “instances of campus sex offenses have risen by as much as 50 percent in just the past three years.” This is an overdue product!
“All of us have been close to someone who has been through the terrible experience, and we began to focus on preventive solutions, especially those that could be integrated into products that women already use,” Ankesh Maden, one of the backers, revealed.
The product is still in research and development. However, if all goes well it should be out in the near future. Thanks to a K50 Startup Showcase, where one investor donated $100,000, it should be!
