WandaVision: Episode 3 Recap & Review

WandaVision has been a big hit for Disney+ and the third episode delivered us so much more than we could ever invision

WandaVision premiered on Disney+ and already has critics and fans raving. The start to Marvel‘s Phase Four has proved to be the biggest pay off for the studio and its streaming service. The first two episodes alone was 24.5% higher in ratings than The Mandalorian, proving that Marvel is back after a lull in its schedule to take over our screens even though we cannot go to the movies. Spoilers ahead if you have not seen the series as of yet.

Episode 3:

Following the events of episode two, Wanda (Elizabeth Olsen) and Vision (Paul Bettany) find themselves in a Brady Bunch styles 70s sitcom version of Westview, the only thing that is different is that now they are in colour and Wanda is pregnant. Wanda is receiving a home visit from Doctor Nielsen (Randy Oglesby) with Vison gripping her hand out of nervousness. Vision asks Doctor Nielsen to keep Wanda’s pregnancy a secret from the other people of Westview, as Wanda’s baby bump begins to grow at an abnormal pace. Vision informs his neighbour Herb (David Payton) that he has “taken the hedge trimming a bit too far” and Herb looks at him with a blank stare whilst his trimmer is stuck in the brick wall.

Wanda uses her powers to decorate the nursey painting it both pink and blue, as well as setting up a crib. Whilst Vision informs Wanda of what he is reading in a parenting book, Wanda begins to feel the baby kicking. In just a few hours, Wanda goes from four months to six months pregnant. Wanda and Vision begin to debate whether to name the baby Billy or Tommy. Wanda decides to put the debate to rest and tells Vision to “hope for a girl”, using her powers to paint an image of a stork on the wall. Vision informs Wanda that the baby is due Friday afternoon, which makes Wanda finally listen to Vision and sit down. Wanda begins to feel Braxton Hicks contractions, which causes her great pain and affects the use of her powers. After Wanda’s contractions stop, the power in Westview goes out.

Wanda asks Vision if the people of Westview have a feeling she caused the power outage, saying “the people of Westview are always on the verge of discovering our secret”. Vision begins to question what is going on around them and then we see him in the place at the start of the scene. Wanda begins to feel real contractions as she is nine months pregnant by this point. This causes Vision to lose control of his emotions and levitate until Wanda has to revert to breathing exercises to calm him down.

It begins to rain inside when Wanda utters the words “I think my water just broke”. Wanda and Vision are keeping shelter under the table when the rain stops and they dry off. Vision decides to speed things up and grab Doctor Nielsen before he heads off on his vacation, leaving Wanda alone. Wanda’s magical contractions cause her to create a stork until the doorbell rings.

She summons a coat from the closet, attempting to hide her baby bump and answers the door to Geraldine (Teyonah Parris). Wanda informs Geraldine that it “isn’t a good time” and Geraldine walks into the house looking to borrow a bucket. She goes to the kitchen to look for a bucket and her contractions cause more magical mishaps. Geraldine decides to sit down on the couch but behind her is the stork that Wanda created. Wanda makes Geraldine stay to distract her whilst she tries to get rid of the stork using her magic. Geraldine mentions she needs office supplies and enters Wanda’s spare room whilst the stork camouflages into the wall painting. Wanda tries to shield her pregnancy from Geraldine but the contractions cause her to reveal her baby bump.

Vison catches Doctor Nielsen fixing his car before he can leave for his vacation, he puts the doctor on his back and run home. Back at the house, Wanda is in labour and Geraldine is getting supplies together whilst madness is ensuing around her. Wanda gives birth to a baby boy when Vision and Doctor Nielsen enter the house. Wanda and Vision share a touching moment with their new baby Tommy ,Wanda screams in pain again and she gives birth to another baby. The next scene shows Wanda and Vision holding two baby boys with delight on their faces. Vison puts one of the twins into the crib and walks Doctor Nielsen out. Outside the house Dr Nielsen tells Vision he won’t be able to go his vacation after all as “small towns are so hard to escape”.

As he greets his neighbours Herb and Agnes (Kathryn Hahn) whispering over the wall, Vision becomes suspicious and decides to approach them. He begins to walk back inside before Agnes stops him and asks if Geraldine is inside the house with Wanda. The ladies admire the twins, which leads Wanda to tell Geraldine of her twin brother Pietro. As Wanda is singing to her new-born babies, Geraldine asks “He was killed by Ultron, wasn’t he?”. Outside Herb and Agnes, confirm Geraldine is new in town and doesn’t seem to have a home. Wanda asks Geraldine what she just said, in which Geraldine says “I said, Wanda you’re such a strong lady”. She wants to know what Geraldine just said about Pietro, she struggles to answer.

She wants Geraldine to leave and in doing so catches sight of the SWORD necklace Geraldine is wearing. Outside, Vision asks Agnes and Herb, “What do you mean she has no home?”. Herb struggles to answer and Agnes grows more concerned over what Herb is about to say. Wanda asks Geraldine what the symbol around her neck is and she struggles to answer. Wanda then demands to know who Geraldine is and under her breath she utters the word “I don’t know”. Herb begins to tell Vision what Geraldine is actually doing in Westview before Agnes cuts him off.

Wanda becomes more frustrated, still wants to know who Geraldine is and she still cannot answer. Vision grows more concerned as Agnes and Herb leave not answering his question about Geraldine. Vision re-enters the house where Wanda is standing over the twins and Geraldine is nowhere to be seen. Wanda says Geraldine had to “rush home”. In the final scene, Geraldine falls out of the sky into a different Westview where she is surrounded by cars and SWORD agents.

Now in Colour But Is It Clear?

The first two episodes set up the series nicely, it is clear what Kevin Feige is trying to do by paying homage to these classic sitcoms. As the episodes continue it becomes clearer that what is going on is bigger than we could have ever imagined. The best thing about this episode was the madness that ensued around Wanda’s pregnancy being used to create a Mork & Mindy style comedic moments that pay homage to another classic 70s sitcom.

In episode two, Geraldine says “I have no idea what I am doing here” which we now know stretches beyond what she was doing at that meeting with Wanda. Geraldine is just a character is this sitcom world and it has been suggested Geraldine may actually be Monica Rambeau. For Marvel fans, Monica Rambeau was the daughter of Carol Danvers’ best friend in Captain Marvel. Geraldine’s necklace is of a sword, in the Marvel Universe, this represents the counterpart agency to SHIELD.

SWORD is the Sentient World Observation which unlike SHIELD delves into extra-terrestrial and other worlds. Whoever Geraldine really is, her character shows promise for the future episodes of this series. The only person who seems to not know exactly what is going on is Vision. Wanda seems to have some control over this world but it may be bigger than her baby bump. There is still so much to unpack as the series progresses and hopefully the vision will all pay off.

WandaVision is now streaming on Disney+. Episode Four is out Friday January 29th.
