WandaVision Episode Seven: Recap & Review

Episode Seven of WandaVision has fans eagerly awaiting the next spellbinding instalment of the Marvel series. Now streaming on Disney+

It’s official, WandaVision is the number one television show in the world. With a 93% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, Marvel have another hit on their hands. This week’s episode has everyone talking and things are heating up in Westview. There are spoilers for those who haven’t seen WandaVision as of yet.

Episode Seven:

The day after she expanded the hex, Wanda is lying in her bed reaching over to Vision’s empty side. In the next shot, Wanda is talking directly to camera. This is a set up seen in popular sitcoms The Office, Parks & Recreation and Modern Family. Billy and Tommy come running into Wanda’s room and inform her their game is “freaking out”. In the cut away scene, Billy and Tommy’s controllers change from modern controllers, to 80s Atari style controllers to Uno cards. Wanda hides underneath the blanket when Billy informs his mother, his head feels weird explaining it’s “noisy”. Wanda tells the camera she is going to take a whole day to herself to think about her actions. She removes the duvet and is still in her Halloween costume.

Wanda ascends down the stairs, makes her way to the kitchen and opens the fridge. Wanda grabs the milk and is about to make herself a bowl of cereal. As she turns around the milk bottle keeps changing, matching the different time periods as seen on the show so far. In the next shot, Wanda suggests to the camera “it’s probably just a case of the Mondays”. Eight miles away, S.W.O.R.D have set up a temporary retreat after a number of agents were overpowered by the Westview anomaly. At this moment, Director Hayward prepares an agent for launching an attack on Westview.

Inside, Vision awakes to the sound of circus music and is now surrounded by what was once S.W.O.R.D agents. Vision gets mistaken for a clown and is informed he is working with the escape artist a.k.a Darcy. He remembers her from his own attempted escape, however in her sitcom persona she assumes he is making a pass at her. Back at the house, Wanda questions the boys over the whereabouts of their father. The boys don’t know his where he is and Wanda brushes it off. Billy brings up the comment made by Pietro in Episode Six about Vision’s death. Wanda interrupts Billy, telling them to not believe anything Pietro says and that he is not their uncle.

She begins to give an inspiring speech to her sons but laughingly says she has no answers. There is a knock at the door and Wanda uses her powers to let Agnes in. Agnes expresses a concerned look for Wanda and suggests that the boys spend the day with her. The boys leave with Agnes to give their mother some time to herself. As Wanda sits there in her all American home, the furniture begins to change. We see various items from the previous time periods but Wanda manages to restore them back to normal.

Outside, Monica and Jimmy are driving to meet the aerospace engineer. Jimmy informs Monica that Darcy was able to break through the last firewall and Director Hayward is planning to re-weaponize Vision. The car pulls up outside the now expanded Westview anomaly and they are greeted by Major Goodner. The aerospace engineer unveils a metal S.W.O.R.D truck which impresses Monica. Back at the circus, Vision reluctantly tries to jog Darcy’s memory. He distracts her and uses his mind powers to break Darcy out of her sitcom persona. Darcy and Vision then decide to commandeer a food truck in order to drive back to Wanda.

Back at the Maximoff house, Wanda’s home continues to change. As she looks to camera, Wanda explains she doesn’t know why everything is falling apart and why she cannot fix it. Behind the camera, a mysterious voice asks, “Do you think maybe this is what you deserve?”. Wanda appears confused and informs this voice that they are not supposed to talk. At Agnes’ house, Billy, Tommy and Agnes are all sitting down together. As Billy is petting Agnes’ rabbit, he tells her he likes being there. She asks him if it is because of the rabbit. He answers saying because it is quiet and expresses that Agnes is quiet on the inside. Tommy’s concerns grow for their mother and Agnes reassures them she is fine. However she tells the camera she definitely not fine.

As Monica is preparing to re-enter Westview, Jimmy wishes her luck and she boards the S.W.O.R.D truck. She suits up and drives into the Westview anomaly. The anomaly rejects the vehicle and Monica ejects herself from the truck. Monica charges through the Westview anomaly, her eyes glowing blue. She removes her protective suit and makes her way to Wanda’s house. As they are driving, Darcy catches Vision up on everything that has happened before Westview. In his interview, Vision believes Wanda is creating diversions to stop him from coming home. He begins to question his previous form and wonders form he is taking now.

Monica busts through Wanda’s door and begins to explain what Director Hayward is up to. Wanda doesn’t want to hear it and uses her powers to throw Monica from her home. As Wanda throws Monica to the ground, we see Monica using her new found powers to save herself. Monica tries to sympathise with Wanda in order to gain her trust, catching the attention of Agnes. As Monica is about to gain her trust, Agnes infiltrates the situation and takes Wanda to her house. In another on camera interview, Vision comes to a realisation he should be with Wanda and flies from the food truck leaving Darcy to drive.

As they enter the house, Agnes begins to comfort Wanda and goes to the kitchen to make her tea. There are two half eaten sandwiches on the table and a kids show on the television. This leads Wanda to ask where the boys are and Agnes answers saying, “They’re probably just playing in the basement”. Wanda arises from the couch and opens the door to the basement searching for her sons. As she makes her way down the stairs Wanda notices a strange looking part of the basement. Surrounded by branches, Wanda discovers a secret lair and Agnes comes out of the dark.

She reveals herself to be the witch Agatha Harkness and uses her powers to show Wanda and the audience its been “Agatha All Along”. With the use of her own theme song Agatha reveals she was behind the magic show mishap, Herb’s strange behaviour in Episode Three, the arrival of Pietro, the interviews and she even killed Sparky. We finally get a post credit scene in this episode, Monica is outside Agnes’ house and open the outside doors to the basement. Monica’s eyes begin to glow at the sight of this entrance when Pietro stuns her and says “snoopers gonna snoop”.

A Brand New Show:

There is a lot to unpack, as this episode answered so many questions but in true Marvel fashion, we are left with many more. Billy appears to be the more prominent of the twins as we saw in Episode Six. He worryingly tells his mother his head is “noisy” and may prove the be a key player in saving this world. We also learn Director Hayward is planning a launch on Westview, in order to get Vision back to re-weaponize him. Fans have theorised that Director Hayward may actually be Ultron in disguise which may prove to be an interesting twist. This also confirms that Wanda actually saved Vision from S.W.O.R.D Headquarters, as we saw in the surveillance footage in Episode Five.

Over the many episodes we have seen many different theme songs depicting Wanda, Vision and other characters throughout the different decades. This week’s WandaVision theme song was inspired by The Office however we don’t see any of the characters we only see Wanda’s name written in a variety of styles. This could be used to signify that Wanda is alone as her family isn’t completely there.

Since an aerospace engineer was mentioned, Marvel fans have theorised that this was Reed Richards from The Fantastic Four. This is an instance where Marvel fans were disappointed, the aerospace engineer in question was actually Major Goodner. A character who more than likely will not be playing a major part in future projects within the MCU.

Darcy and Vision, although an unlikely pairing became a dynamic duo in this episode. The chemistry between Kat Dennings and Paul Bettany was present on screen and they bounced off each other in the best way. As Vision questions what form he is currently taking, Darcy brings up the issue as to why he cannot leave Westview. That question has been sitting in the minds of Marvel fans and can only be answered by his loving wife.

Although this is another episode of WandaVision, it also acts as an origin story for Monica Rambeau’s powers. Comic book fans, have been eagerly awaiting to see if Monica will become her comic book counterpart Photon. In Episode Six, Darcy informed Wanda that the hex was changing her and as she passed through the hex again, we saw the birth of a brand new superhero. Another fun Easter Egg for Marvel fans, as Monica passes through the hex we heard audio from Captain Marvel solidifying her role in the sequel.

Before we get to the big reveal, Billy describes Agnes as, “quiet on the inside”. Billy had been able to hear everyone’s thoughts so there may be someone or something stopping him for hearing Agnes’ thoughts. Since Episode One, Marvel fans have theorised and speculated that the friendly neighbour Agnes is really the witch Agatha Harkness. Kathryn Hahn’s performance in this scene is so perfect, she deserves an Emmy. Throughout the catchy theme song we learn that it has been Agatha all along and it’s been her show from the very beginning. Wanda has been a side character in what is really Agatha’s sitcom and the new witch in Westview will be making her mark in the final two episodes.

Something that caught Wanda’s eye as well as the eyes of fans was a mysterious book in Agatha’s lair. Comic book fans have theorised that this is The Darkhold. In the comics, The Darkhold was used to bring to life an elder god called The Siphon. Another way to bring him to life is through a sacrifice, which could be why Agatha needs Wanda, Tommy and Billy.

Something else we got in this episode of WandaVision, was a post-credit scene. As Monica opens the doors to Agatha’s lair, Pietro frightens her and says “snoopers gonna snoop”. This character has opened up up a big box of questions. We know that Agatha somehow summoned this version of Pietro but who is he really? Could he be Quiksilver from the X-Men universe? Is he Agatha’s mysterious husband Ralph in disguise? Or is he Mephisto?

With reveal of Agatha Harkness, we are exiting the sitcom format and entering a brand new show. There are only two episodes left of WandaVision and leaving so many more question to be answered. If we could cast a spell and give you the next episode now we would.

WandaVision is now streaming on Disney+. Episode Eight will be available February 26th.
