An English language release of Studio Ghibli’s The Tale of Princess Kaguya is set to hit U.S. theaters on October 17, and the new trailer indicates that this film will be another proud entry in the Japanese studio’s long line of intelligent, moving, elegant and gorgeously animated films.

The movie is an adaptation of the classic Japanese folktale The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter, a story which has seen many prior versions in modern Japanese film, television and literature including inspiring plot lines in manga and anime series such as Naruto, Sailor Moon and Inuyasha.

Studio Ghibli’s spin on the tale is directed and co-written by acclaimed filmmaker Isao Takahata. Takahata’s previous works, such as Grave of the Fireflies and My Neighbors The Yamadas, have resonated with moviegoers in Japan and all over the world.

The Tale of Princess Kaguya is done in traditional 2D animation and won’t feature any talking cars, wacky mascots, or Broadway style musical numbers, but it looks like it will deliver excitement, wonder, magic, and lush, stunning, simply beautiful animation. Here’s hoping American audiences will embrace the chance to experience a movie that may be different from the usual Hollywood animated fare.

Watch the trailer below and immerse yourself in the majesty of The Tale of Princess Kaguya.
