Weird Al Week – Day 1: Tacky

Their are very few genuine musical geniuses in the world, but one of them is “Weird Al” Yankovic. He is responsible for some of the funniest parodies of some of the biggest hits ever, and while popular song parodies are not as quirky as they were before (due to every second person on YouTube being apt at parodies), Weird Al still remains the king of the novelty song. For the last month, he’s been teasing his new album, Mandatory Fun, which is out tomorrow. He is also releasing a music video for each of those songs everyday, starting today in what I am calling Weird Al Week.

The first music video comes in the form of “Tacky,” a parody of the super-hit “Happy” by Pharrell Williams. Weird Al has taken the song from being a catchy and gleeful tune about, well…being happy, and turned it into a song about being, you know – tacky. From poor fashion sense to the inappropriate amount of our lives shared on social media, this song is pretty much the official anthem for all things tacky.

The music video is star-studded. Aisha Tyler, Margaret Cho, Eric Stonestreet, Jack Black, Kristen Schaal and Weird Al himself strutting down the corridors and elevators of a building, all wearing colorful, and, yes, tacky clothes, lip-syncing to the song. It may not be Weird Al’s most ambitious music video, but man is it funny and reminds us that “Weird Al” Yankovic is pretty much the king.
