Anyone familiar with “Weird Al” Yankovic’s music knows that he has made his name through hilarious parodies of various chart-topping hits and iconic songs.

However, Weird Al has also done many songs whereby he doesn’t directly parody a specific song, but instead creates an original composition in the style of a specific artist or band. This has allowed Weird Al to create some ingenious original work, and today (July 18) he has released the first original composition off his latest album, Mandatory Fun (which you can get on his website or iTunes).

“Sports Song” is exactly that – a song about sports in the style of college football fight songs. The song has a marching band theme, while Weird Al sings about how his team is the best and the other team is vastly inferior, as most of the songs he is parodying here say that – the difference is he explicitly states that his team is great (well, as he says in the song, his team is not that good, but the other team is terrible).

The video looks just like a college football halftime show, with Weird Al leading the band. In the bleachers, enthusiastic fans show how great they think their team is, while pretty much reviling the opposing team.

It isn’t as incredibly high-concept as the preceding videos, but it finds its hilarity in how simple it is.
