How about a Christmas tale to warm your holiday hearts? A little bit of Christmas cheer and a little bit of marketing wizardry saw Canadian WestJet make a whole bunch of unsuspecting passengers’ day.
More than 150 airline staff participated in the stunt, which saw the recording of ‘requests’ made by 250 passengers to a virtual Santa Clause kiosk that asked them what they wanted for Christmas once they’d scanned their boarding passes.
As passengers boarded their Calgary-bound flights from Toronto and Hamilton, Westjet staff rushed to find and buy the presents before wrapping and delivering them to Calgary International Airport.
Upon arrival the unwitting passengers waited for their luggage, but were surprised when wrapped presents, rather than their bags, rolled out on the baggage carousel. There was fake snow, lots of laughter and even some tears as children and adults opened their presents to discover they’d been given exactly what they asked for.
The video of how WestJet staff coordinated their brilliant ‘Christmas miracle’ has gone viral, amassing over 12 million views. This is excellent, as WestJet had committed to donating flights through Ronald McDonald House Charities once the video reached 200,000 views.
