Just days after the Golden Globes and on the same day the Oscar nominees were announced, the who’s who of Hollywood gathered for the 2014 Critics’ Choice Awards (CCA).

The CCA’s are handed out annually by the Broadcast Film Critics Association (BFCA), and honour the finest in cinematic achievement for the preceding year.

After taking out the Best Picture award at the Globes, and earning nine Oscar nominations, 12 Years a Slave took out the top award with the BFCA naming it the best film of 2013. The film also brought in a best supporting actress win for Lupita Nyong’o and best adapted screenplay for John Ridley.

The most wins of the evening went to Gravity, taking out a record breaking seven statues. Alfonso Cuaron was given the nod for Best Director and Sandra Bullock was awarded Best Actress in an action movie. Other awards received were for Best Sci-Fi/Horror movie, Visual Effects, Cinematography and Score and Editing, which Cuaron shared with Mark Sanger.

American Hustle claimed four awards with Best Comedy Actress going to Amy Adams and also Best Comedy, Acting Ensemble and Makeup. Lead Actor honours went to Matthew McConaughey for Dallas Buyers Club and Lead Actress to Cate Blanchett for Blue Jasmine. Supporting Actor went to Jared Leto for Dallas Buyers Club and Comedy Actor to Leonardo DiCaprio for The Wolf of Wall Street.

Of course the entire evening wasn’t all formalities; there were a few lighter moments such as Sandra Bullock and Bradley Cooper dropping the F-bomb on stage to Cate Blanchett who told the audience that her children “don’t give a shit” what she does.

All in all the Critics Choice Awards are regarded by some as the finest indicator of how the Academy Awards will fall, and with the previous two years winners for Best Picture, Argo and The Artist, going on the claim the Oscar, and if you were to think that 12 Years a Slave was the top contender to win the Oscar, I’d have to agree.
