This past March, a 92-year-old woman in Germany was declared “dead” after a caretaker found her without a pulse and not breathing at a retirement home. She was taken to a funeral home, where a worker heard screaming coming from the refrigeration room later that night. He found the woman alive.
The 53-year-old doctor who pronounced the woman “dead” is now being charged with negligent bodily harm. On Tuesday, prosecutor Birgit Juergens said that the doctor, if convicted, could face anything from a fine to prison time.
In a hospital two days after the occurrence at the funeral home, the woman officially died due to heart disease.
