Young and the Restless actor Kristoff St. John has filed a wrongful death suit against Telecare Corporation, owner of La Casa Mental Health Rehabilitation Center in Long Beach, California. St. John and his ex-wife, boxer Mia St. John, allege that the mental health care center was negligent in preventing the suicide of their son, Julian. Julian St. John committed suicide at the facility shortly before his 25th birthday last November.
The lawsuit accuses La Casa staff of “widespread and pervasive” negligence related to Julian’s death. The suit claims the staff failed to check on Julian every fifteen minutes as they had been instructed to do, waiting over an hour instead. Staff allegedly also waited for almost thirty minutes before calling 911 after discovering Julian. The suit also charges that La Casa officials falsified records pertaining to the death.
Telecare released a statement claiming that they had not been served with the suit as of yet. It also added:
“We believe it is important to state that the California Department of Health Care Services reviewed the case and on May 5, 2015 found that La Casa was in compliance with all applicable licensing laws and regulations. Similarly, the Los Angeles Department of Mental Health concluded that Mr. St. John’s treatment and care at La Casa was reasonable and in line with clinical procedures, given his mental condition.”
The soap star told ET that he hopes the lawsuit will expose “the inefficiency and the incompetency that happens in mental hospitals nationwide.”
On May 26, he also tweeted that he was “going to war for justice” for his son:
Going to war…for justice…vindication…for my son Julian and those that suffer from mental illness.
