While Zoe Saldana is now arguably the modern-day Princess of Sci-Fi with hits like AvatarStar Trek, and Guardians of the Galaxy now under her belt, longtime fans of hers will remember that she had her breakthrough with the road trip comedy Crossroads, costarring alongside Britney Spears and Anson Mount.

It wasn’t a well-received hit, but a cult classic in its own right, and in a recent interview with ET, Zoe reminded everyone of her roots by acknowledging a recent controversy surrounding Spears. Upon the leaking of a Melodyne-less demo of her song “Allen” having been released, Britney received hateful comments across the globe for a so-called inability to sing.

Of the controversy, Saldana was quick to defend Spears and speak down to the haters, saying, “I have a huge amount of respect for Britney Spears. I’ve always said this, and I will always continue to say it: She was the one big, big celebrity that I met when I was starting to work in Hollywood, who literally was humble, and whatever was going on in her mind there in her world, it was never about hating her neighbor.”

She went on to say, “I’m pretty sure that 80 percent of our musical artists would be mortified if they were caught singing without their own autotune.”

…That’s a pretty good point, if you ask me. It’s all a point of trying to tear someone down that you’ve already built up– something that we do far too often in the world of pop culture; an especially pitiable act when Spears has never really done much notably cruel to anybody in the past.

Finally, of Saldana’s defending her, Spears had only kind words and great memories to look back on in this recent Instagram posting of hers, with this caption: @ZoeSaldana is truly the sweetest. Nothing but great memories of working with her.

It’s good to see that, 12 years later, a mutual respect between two of the arts’ most influential leading women still stands strong!
