Dakota Johnson (Ben and Kate) has spoken out about what could potentially be her breakthrough role as Anastasia Steele, the innocent and insecure protagonist of Fifty Shades of Grey.

“[When I got the call], they said ‘You got the offer’ and I couldn’t speak,” she recalled. “I was just so relieved. I was crying and crying. Water was literally squirting out of my eyes because I had been so stressed out.”

While it remains to see how well the erotic romance movie will appeal to audiences amidst the controversy that has surrounded the best-selling book since its publication in 2011, fans of the book will be happy to hear what the lead actress has to say about the project.

“I just really understand it,” Johnson told Entertainment Weekly. “I think it’s an incredible love story and that’s why it’s affected so many people.”

Alongside Johnson as Anastasia will be Jamie Dornan (The Fall), who will play male protagonist Christian Grey. Jennifer Ehle (Zero Dark Thirty), Elliot Grey (True Blood) and Victor Rasuk have also been confirmed as part of the cast.

Author E.L James will get the final say in the direction the project takes, getting script, casting and director approval.

“[EL James] did a really good job of explaining how that just can happen sometimes and you have this chemical pull to someone”, Johnson said.
