When the hit jukebox musical “Mamma Mia” announced it would be leaving the Winter Garden theatre there was speculation as to what would it fill the legendary venue? Shortly after, the speculation was put to an end when it was announced that the boxing drama Rocky that premiered last year in Germany would open in February of 2014 on Broadway.

The Rocky musical will be directed by Alex Timbers, and will be produced and presented by Stage Entertainment USA and original star, Sylvester Stallone. “I couldn’t be more proud or more excited about this production and how my original story of Rocky Balboa has been brought to spectacular life on stage,” said Stallone. Steven Hoggett (of Best Musical winner Once) and Kelly Devine (of the hit Rock of Ages) will serve as the choreographers of the musical. Hoggett will lead on fight choreography, while Devine will take charge of dance choreography.

The Rocky musical celebrated its world premiere last fall in Hamburg, Germany, opening to rave reviews. An official opening is slated for March, with an exact premiere date yet to be announced.

So what do you think? Will Rocky be a box office knock out or fall flat in the ring?
