Absolutely Fabulous writer and co-star, Jennifer Saunders had made it clear that a big-screen adaptation of the sitcom will ‘never happen’. Un an interview on BBC 4’s Front Row Saunders, who writes the show while also playing Edina Monsoon, has reconsidered the idea of an Ab Fab film. It’s no secret that her co-star Joanna Lumley, who plays Patsy Stone, has previously said that she would be happy to star in a film adaptation of the show.
Even BBC executive Shane Allen had earlier voiced support from the broadcaster for more of the sitcom.
Saunders, however, has stated that she felt expectations were too high for there to be a film. The writer stated that the pressure of producing a script that was ‘good enough’ felt almost too much for her to handle. “Everyone keeps going, ‘Oh why don’t you do a film? Why don’t you do some more?’ And you keep thinking, ‘Because the expectation is so high!’”
Saunders and Lumley both reprised their roles for three special episodes, including a Christmas special, in the past year. Perhaps Saunders may pander to fans after all, her 2014 schedule appears to be clear and she has stated that she has many little projects on the go.
“One of them might be the Ab Fab film, I don’t know. As we’re going into winter, a nice little summertime film seems rather attractive.”
Only time will tell, but if Saunders does yield wouldn’t it be fabulous? Absolutely.
